BLURB: Renata is a Moria, an unnatural magic-wielder in the eyes of the Leonnese people in  'Inquistion-era' inspired Spain. Her past and the pasts of all those she stole, haunt her, suffused into one painful fog preventing her future from emerging anything other than bleak. Her people are being hunted, their numbers decimated, their homeland disappearing. The only solution is to defeat the Fajardo family royalty with the cruel King Fernando and his even crueller son, Prince Castian, at his side. Will Renata and her fellow warriors succeed or fall victim as those before them.

REVIEW (SPOILERS): At first I found myself frustrated, the plot seemed slow and the main character endlesslessly frustrating and self-deprecating (seemingly justifying the general public dislike for her in the book). The first 100 pages I thought were not enough to stand out from the deluge of fantasy novels. But like many readers, I had to follow through.

The book surprised me by becoming 'un-put-down-able'. The constant  turns made for tenterhook reading and the not-so formulaic plot surprises grabbed my attention throughout. I just hoped for some kind of catharsis throughout which the book just refused to provide, keeping me engaged from pages 100-450. I loved that Córdova's writing intensifies the chase for answers, both for characters and readers.

I found myself buying the second book before I'd even realised - curious to read more about the relationship between Castian and Renata and whether it would develop beyond childhood friends. For those that enjoyed 'The Golden Compass' the unnatural magical draining may ring a bell but

My only complaints is the length is unequal to its capacity to grab attention and for once the main character to get the redemption she deserves. The focal point of Renata's characterisation is so entrenched in her guilt and inward shame (compounded by those around her), her character at times becomes one-dimensional. I believe the next book might layer her character with some of the levity she displays; however briefly, in Dez's company.
